Yachats Lions Club resurrects “Lunch Bunch” gatherings Thursday

YACHATS — A popular monthly gathering returns this week when the Yachats Lions Club resumes its “Lunch Bunch” meal Thursday at the clubhouse on West Forth Street.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m. for the noon seating, which offers diners alcohol-free Kalua Pork (a Merriman’s Hawaii restaurant recipe), steamed rice, green salad and holiday pies. Suggested donation is $6.

Lions Club president David Okelley, who runs the club’s public breakfasts, will reprise his role as chef for the event. “There seems to be a lot of interest,” Okelley said, emphasizing that all are welcome to enjoy fellowship and a good meal in a convivial atmosphere.

Lunch Bunch was a tradition run by a handful of locals and staged at the Commons in the past. In 2018, the event became a function of the Lions Club, but went dark in the pandemic years of 2021-22.

“We’re glad to be re-starting Lunch Bunch,” said Okelley, adding that some 50-60 people are expected. “It’s all about the fellowship.” No reservations are needed.

Lunch Bunch is planned to take place on at noon on the third Thursday of each month at the Lions clubhouse.

The club’s hugely popular annual Crab Feed returns Saturday, Jan. 27. Tickets are expected to go on sale in early January. For details, those interested are urged to check the club’s website.

The club is also planning to bring back a long-format speaker series on Sunday afternoons beginning in February.

  1. Congratulations, David ! For reviving Lunch Bunch. The Yachats Senior Luncheon began over twenty years ago, also with a Christmas Luncheon. Barbara LeBoss and Carl Miller were amongst its founders, providing a much needed get-together event for us Seniors, until the plague of Covid19. Six bucks for a meal and the opportunity to meet-and-greet ones fellow travellers, what a deal !
