The month of October saw below-normal rainfall in the Yachats area — but two storms this week are expected to get November off to a very wet start.
Weather watchers who report rain and other data to YachatsNews said their rainfall amounts were below their long-term averages for October.
Don Tucker, who lives three miles north of Yachats on the east side of U.S. Highway 101, reported 5.39 inches of rain in October — nine-tenths of an inch below his average over 17 years of record-keeping. Tucker’s total for the year is 47.06 inches of rain.
Jim Adler, who lives three miles up the Yachats River, measured 6.61 inches of rain in October — more than an inch below his 14-year average. His total for the year is 61.63 inches of rain.
And, at the city of Yachats wastewater treatment plant on West Seventh Street, staff there measured 3.82 inches of rain in October — less than half of its 10-year average for the month. The city’s total for the year is 41.47 inches.
Other October rainfall totals included:
- Adam Altson measured 4.13 inches in October at his house overlooking Oceanview Drive, and has 44.75 inches for the year;
- Julie Bailey, who lives at the 220 foot elevation level on Radar Road in Yachats, measured 4.45 inches of rain and has 49.56 for the year; and
- Bob Williams, who lives eight miles up the Yachats River, measured the most at 7.55 inches of rain and has 73.97 inches for the first 10 months of 2023.
Other October weather observations include:
- Tucker recorded his highest October temperature in 17 years with an 82 degree measurement on Oct. 6. His average high temperature of 61.1 degrees for October was also a record.
- Altson recorded a high of 83.8 degrees Oct. 6, his second 80 degree day of 2023. A low temperature of 33.7 degrees on Oct. 28 was the lowest October temperature he’s measured in 11 years by more than two degrees.
