YACHATS – A 61-year-old Yachats man died Tuesday night after he apparently suffered a medical event and crashed his pickup truck into a ditch along U.S. HIghway 101 near Salmon Street, one mile north of the city.
Oregon State Police on Wednesday identified the driver as David A. Stendal.
State police said Stendal was driving south on Highway 101 about 8:24 p.m. Tuesday when he crossed over the northbound lane and went into the ditch. A PacWest ambulance took Stendal to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport, where he was pronounced dead.
Police said in a news release that it is presumed a medical event precipitated the crash.
In addition to PacWest Ambulance, state police were assisted by Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies and personnel from the Yachats Rural Fire Protection District.
