Online reservations open for annual Yachats Lions Club’s crab feed fundraiser; take-out only Jan. 29

Yachats Lions Club volunteers last year put together dinners during the first year of the take-out only event. The crab feed is repeating Saturday, Jan. 29 again as take-out only.

YACHATS — For the second year in a row, the Yachats Lion’s Club’s annual Crab Feed will be a take-out only event, with meals available for pick up Saturday, Jan. 29.

Instead of seafood fans filling tables elbow-to-elbow, as in years past, Lions Club volunteers will work under COVID-19 protocols to prepare the meals featuring Dungeness crab.

Tickets priced at $35 per person are available on the club’s website, which also offers a choice of pick-up times on Jan. 29. Each meal consists of one whole local Dungeness crab, coleslaw and homemade bread. There is no limit to the number of meals that can be bought online and an extra crab can be purchased with each meal for an additional $25. Meals will be available for pick-up at the Lions Hall, 344 W. Fourth St.

“We get great support from the community and local businesses,” said Kevin Yorks, coordinator of the event. “Last year we sold over 200 meals and were sold out in early January,” Yorks said. “We have increased the number of meals we can sell, but expect sales to be strong.”

Last year, the event sold out twice. This year, the Lions Club anticipates selling about 250 meals. The crab are purchased, cooked and cleaned by South Beach Fish Market

“Because these are all pre-sales, I can wait until the very end to place the order” before cutting off reservations, Yorks said. “If we reach 300, we will cut it off, just because I don’t think we can produce that many meals in a short period of time.”

Yorks urged people to reserve their meals soon, although noting that an increase in club members and volunteers has enabled it to make additional meals available.

“With new residents moving in, including club members from other locations and people joining at our thrift store, our membership has expanded dramatically,” he said.

All proceeds from the annual Crab Feed fundraiser support Lions community service projects including scholarships to graduating high school seniors, food pantries, the preschool and after school programs of Yachats Youth and Family program, South Lincoln Resources programs, and eyeglasses for children and adults.

Last year, the Yachats Lions gave $25,000 to the programs supported. While most of the funds are generated by the Thrift Store at 236 Fourth St., the crab feed is the club’s single biggest fundraising event. The club has served Yachats and South Lincoln County for 71 years.
