The Yachats area received the most rain in October in at least four years, but it is still has a long way to go to reach the average rainfall for a calendar year.
The city of Yachats measured 6.74 inches of rain in October at its wastewater treatment plant, the most since 2016. It has recorded 39.43 inches of rain for the first 10 months of 2021 — almost 11 inches below the annual average for the past 10 years.
Jim Adler, who lives three miles up the Yachats River, measured 8.81 inches of rain in October, the most since 2017. His 10-month total is 58.33 inches – almost 20 inches more than what has been measured at the city gauge on West Seventh Street, one block from the ocean.
The wet October helped slightly increase the percent of average rain for the year. At the end of September, Yachats had received 76 percent of the 10-year average rainfall. By the end of October, that had increased to 78 percent of average. The average rainfall total through October the last 10 years at the city’s treatment plant is 50.33 inches.
But, rainfall totals from around the area, as usual, shows that the amount of rain depends on where and how it was measured.
Adam Altson, who lives just a block from the wastewater treatment plant, measured 11.15 inches in October and has 56.79 for the year.
Donald Tucker, who lives two miles north of Yachats on the east side of U.S. Highway 101, measured 7.94 inches in October and 46.85 inches for the year.
Bob Williams, who lives eight miles up the Yachats River, measured 9.74 inches for a 10-month total of 73.80 inches.
