You may have noticed something new on the homepage of YachatsNews.com this week – an advertisement (for an electric car show, no less!).
When I launched YachatsNews.com in January I did not know how the community would receive it. But I felt there should be a strong demand and appreciation for straightforward community journalism.
From what I can tell, that’s been the case.
The site is now being visited more than 9,000 times a month – and growing. While its reach is fairly narrow – aimed strictly at the Yachats area or people in someway connected to the community – the nature of the contact is deep. More than 1,700 individuals visited the site in March – more than double Yachats’ population. More than 225 people have signed up to receive weekly email reminders of the site’s content.
Because of that response, and because I hope to keep growing the width and depth of the content, YachatsNew.com is now accepting advertising. A former colleague at The Oregonian newspaper who now works in digital advertising is coordinating the effort. Blue Sprocket Brokerage can handle everything from ad production to placement to billing. It’s a one-stop service.

This is not a big money operation. Any proceeds will be used to recover startup costs, pay ongoing web expenses and give a small stipend to freelance writers I hope to use.
YachatsNews.com is showing to be a popular site for community journalism. I hope it can also provide an opportunity for local businesses and organizations to get their message to readers as well.
