The Lincoln County School District has received a state grant of $222,750 to expand its early childhood education programs in Waldport, Newport, Toledo and Lincoln City.

The grant – while less than the district requested – is part of a state program to boost enrollment of low-income families in its preschool program.

The district had sought enough money to expand the program by 48 students, but because of state budget cuts was granted enough funds for 18 new students this fall and another 18 in 2021-22. The district said it will add 4-5 students at each of its early childhood education sites.

“We were hoping to receive all 48 slots we applied for, as we know there is a major shortage of preschool and child care in our county, and a need to provide these services free or at minimal cost to working families,” said Lauren Sigman, the district’s early learning coordinator. “We are excited to be able to receive the 18 slots this year and next year so that we can begin serving families and children who will benefit from having access to free preschool in our programs.”

The funding will be used to pay for staff, supplies, curriculum, and other program operating costs which are usually paid for by tuition charged to families. “Having this funding will allow us to continue to operate a high-quality early learning program without having to charge families who qualify for free tuition,” Sigman said.
