To the Editor:
Thank you, Fran Morse, for your letter that so eloquently, and in such a heartfelt manner, stating what my husband and I have been calling “Yachats’ Growing Pains.” Your description of the disconnect between those who long for the “old days” in the guise of small-town quirkiness and those who see the maturing of a vibrant coastal community is spot on.
We too have seen positive changes here since purchasing our home in June 2016. Both myself and my husband volunteer on city commissions. So much of the work and funding that takes
place now is in large part thanks to having a competent city manager who knows and understands how the business of government works. The transparency and easily understandable finance documents, the transparent and open processes used for the hiring of city employees as well as contract workers, and the forging of inter-agency relationships have all been to the benefit of the city and its citizens.
Both John and I are in your debt for voicing what we believe and what many people feel. No place is perfect, and certainly that holds true here. But as you say, this is the year 2020 and we
need more than volunteer spirit if we are going to survive in the world that is rapidly coming our way. Growth of any kind can be painful, but it doesn’t have to be bad. It is all in your way of
looking at it and planning ahead.
