Since the annual used-book sale run by Friends of Yachats Library was felled by the pandemic this year, the group is trying something new — a “pop-up” book sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, June 28.
Running concurrently with the Yachats Farmers Market, the pop-up sale will be held inside pavilion behind the Commons building. It will offer current and popular titles in hardcover and paperback books and puzzles donated the past year, with all proceeds going towards the library’s planned expansion.
“We’ll try to have these pop-up sales every Sunday during the Farmer’s Market,” said Friends president Sandy Dunn. “We’re asking everyone to please wear a mask, and practice social distancing inside the Pavilion.”
Friends of Yachats Library has been storing its donated books inside the nearby 501 Building, but was asked by the city to move them as renovations begin on that structure. Dunn said that due to storage restrictions, the group is not accepting book donations at the moment.
Buyers can may bring their own bags, or buy a Friends cloth bag for $2. Future pop-up sales will be “entirely dependent on whether we have enough volunteers to set them up and staff the area during the sale itself,” said Dunn. Dunn said that since the Yachats Library closed in March, “We’ve given away over 1,000 books so people can have something to read.” Those free books have been provided in a bookcase at the front of the 501 Building.
The annual book sale cancelled this year was begun more than 25 years ago, and traditionally filled the Commons’ multipurpose room with almost 10,000 volumes. It is the major fundraiser of the year for nonprofit Friends group in support of the all-volunteer-operated but city-owned library.
