Each fall, the Newport Visual Arts Center helps create the next wave of displaying artists with a diverse range of creative workshops for all skill levels.
From printmaking to painting, these courses provide a unique opportunity for both beginning and experienced artists to explore new techniques and express their creativity.
Artist Jill Marks will lead “Gel Plate Printing with Handmade Stencils” on Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 1-4 p.m. The workshop is designed for all skill levels and focuses on creating unique monoprints using a gel plate, acrylic paints, found objects and handmade stencils. Registration is $75.
On Tuesday, Sept. 30, from 5-7 p.m., join Jocelyn Stoody for “Suminagashi/Orizomegashi.” Suminagashi is the ancient Japanese art of marbling where patterns are created on water with ink and transferred to paper and Orizomegashi is a technique for creating tie-dyed effects on folded paper. Registration is $65.
Cheryl Horton will teach two classes this fall.
“Introduction to Intaglio” on Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 6-8 pm, will take place in the center’s new printmaking studio. Students will learn the dry point method of printmaking, creating an image on a plate with a sharp tool and then inking and printing it. Participants will leave with a finished plate and professional print. Registration is $65.
On Saturday, Oct. 25, from noon to 4:30 pm, Horton will lead “Intermediate Block Printing” for students with some prior experience. This workshop will teach multi-color printmaking, including techniques for accurate registration and professional-looking numbered prints. Registration is $85.
LaRaye Rushing’s “Monoprint Basics with Botanicals” will be held from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14. The class teaches participants how to create one-of-a-kind prints using a printing press and dried, pressed plants. Students will leave with a series of botanical prints. Registration is $65 plus a $10 materials fee.
On Saturday, Oct. 18, from 1-4 p.m., Jill Marks will once again lead her popular “Gyotaku Printmaking” class. Students will learn about this unique Japanese printmaking style, then create their own cards using a real octopus specimen. The class is suitable for both new and experienced students. Registration is $100.
Artist Robin Berry will also lead two workshops.
“Surf & Rocks in Watercolor” is a two-day workshop, running from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 23 and 24. Students will learn to paint crashing waves and textured rocks using various watercolor techniques, with a focus on washes and brush effects. Registration is $125.
“Abstract Acrylic Landscape,” is a four-part class running Tuesdays, Oct. 28 to Nov. 18, from 1-4 p.m. The class will teach a loose, gestural style of acrylic painting, focusing on simplifying a beach scene landscape and building confidence with the medium. Registration is $225.
