By CHERYL ROMANO/YachatsNews

Spring activities start blooming this weekend and next with a colorful slate of events in Yachats and Waldport. The Spring Break lineup includes two arts and crafts fairs, a book sale and a sale of household goods to support a local resource center.

52nd Annual Yachats Arts and Crafts Fair

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 23-24, the fair in the Yachats Commons features about 40 Oregon artists offering works in a wide array of media. The arts and crafts include original paintings, handcrafted jewelry, art glass, pottery, ceramics, furniture, woodwork, sculpture, photography and clay. Admission is free, which is sponsored by the Yachats Chamber of Commerce. For more information, visit the chamber’s website.

Yachats Ladies Club Two Weekend Spring Crafts Bazaar

Johanna Starr All sizes, shapes and colors of handmade quilts will be available this weekend and next during the Yachats Ladies Club’s craft sale.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday-Saturday, March 22-23 and Friday-Saturday, March 29-30 in the organization’s clubhouse at West Third and Pontiac streets in Yachats. The Ladies Club Spring Crafts Bazaar offers two full weekends of goodies, from homemade baked goods, including a variety of mini-pies, to crochet and knitted home and personal items, to pillows, home-made soaps and more.

Also available are tickets for the club’s 2024 Scholarship Quilt Raffle, the proceeds of which goes to the club’s Oregon Coast Community College scholarship fund.

Most of the proceeds from the club’s bazaars, which take place throughout the year, benefit local nonprofits such as Yachats Youth and Family Activities Program, food banks in Waldport and Yachats, and the Friends of Lincoln County Animal Shelter. Cheryl Romano Home goods priced from $1 to several hundred dollars abound at The Unexpected Elephant, the Waldport re-sale shop that benefits low-income families in south Lincoln County.

Unexpected Elephant

The resale of household goods is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23 at South Lincoln Resources, 3710 Crestline Drive, Waldport. The sale is a major fundraising event of household goods staged several times through spring and summer. The proceeds all help sustain and maintain South Lincoln Resources’ two warehouses where Waldport FoodShare and Adventist Clothing Share serve people in need. Furniture and appliances are also available free.

Volunteers at the Unexpected Elephant gather items of special value donated throughout the year, priced from $1 to several hundred dollars. Goods range from kitchenware to crafts, furniture to china, all hand-selected and competitively priced. For more information, visit the organization’s website.

Friends of Yachats Library Spring Book Sale

The sale takes place on the second weekend of Oregon’s spring break, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 29-30 at the Yachats Commons.  The sale is the group’s a major fundraiser in support of the Yachats Library, featuring books and puzzles. This year a special collection of 500 books will be featured in Room 3 of the Commons, ranging in price from $5 to $60. These titles include classics, as well as first editions/first printings of fiction by well-known authors. Nearby will be a table with paperbacks for sale for $1.

In the Commons basement more than 6,000 used books in excellent condition will cover a wide array of genres — mysteries, cookbooks, gardening, biography, travel, history, romance and arts and craft. Fiction and nonfiction books will be $2, children’s books $1, with a separate section for titles priced $5 and up, such as signed copies and coffee table books. Jigsaw puzzles will be $5.

Shoppers are urged to bring their own bags, since cloth bags are no longer for sale at the event. For more information, visit the group’s website.
