To the editor:

So many reasons exist why we should vote yes on bond measure 21-232, the renewal bond for the Lincoln County School District.

Let’s start with the average age of our schools — more than 50 years. That means they were built back in the 1970s when I was a student, and the world was a whole lot different. Building systems wear down and need fixing, and the school upkeep fairies won’t fix them for us.

Also, making proactive investments is smart. Upgrading our schools now will save millions in the years to come because it’s a lot less expensive to spend money on repairs than it is to replace entire buildings. And the state will provide millions in matching funds, something that it may not do years from now.

Furthermore, we have a robust community college system here on the central coast, and students who pursue post-high school training need to be well prepared to enter those programs. Providing a solid foundation to build upon will result in a vigorous workforce to meet the requirements for sustaining and improving the communities where we live. Our future literally depends on how we treat our kids now.

I find it hard to believe that anyone thinks it’s a good idea to educate our students in run-down, funky buildings with failing electrical systems. So let’s not allow that to happen. Our students deserve the best education furnished in the safest environment that we can give them. And in the long run everyone will benefit.
