Newport lawyer, wife of chief deputy, supports Cable for DA

May 3, 2020
To the editor: As you may have seen, Jonathan Cable’s campaign slogan is “Experience Matters,” and never has this been more true than in these troubling times. I first met Jonathan Cable in 2008 when my husband, Brian Gardner, accepted a position as a Lincoln County deputy district attorney. At that time, Jonathan had already been working as a deputy

Three Democrats vying in May primary election for secretary of state nomination

May 2, 2020
By PETER WONG/Oregon Capital Bureau For the seventh time since World War II — but for the first time ever in back-to-back election cycles — the race for Oregon secretary of state is wide open. Three Democrats and two Republicans seek their party nominations for the state’s second-ranking office in the May 19 primary.  Democrats are Shemia Fagan of Happy

Save Our Siletz founders support Kamikawa for Lincoln County commissioner

May 2, 2020
To the editor: We started Save Our Siletz River in May 2018 when we met Betty Kamikawa, who is now the group’s soil scientist. Together and individually we have spent more than two years years of volunteering, attending city and county meetings, holding and attending a biosolids summit, conducting workgroups, going to state hearings, and more. We are trying to

Lincoln County judge refutes Newport lawyer’s reversal claim

May 2, 2020
I feel compelled to respond to a recent letter to the editor by Newport attorney David Beal. He states that 25 of 30 cases of my rulings on appeal have been reversed for “illegal sentences.” First, do not be misled that 30 cases have been appealed in my career. When a case is appealed, the state sends the court a

Juror on felony case not impressed with Cable’s courtroom work

May 2, 2020
To the editor: I had the eye-opening experience of serving on jury duty in early 2019. As part of a felony jury, I heard the evidence in a truly disturbing domestic violence case. While the facts of the case were difficult to hear, it was also difficult for me to hear that in January the governor had appointed the defense attorney in that case, Jonathan Cable, as Lincoln County’s new district attorney. I will be frank. I was not impressed with the lawyering on either side of the case. But my fellow jurors and I ultimately reached the right outcome. Mr. Cable, the defense attorney, demonstrated a particular lack of passion and skill.  He mumbled, put his head down so we often could not hear him, and seemed to just be going through the motions.  I remember

Waldport’s interim mayor urges vote for Claire Hall as county commissioner

May 2, 2020
To the editor: Lincoln County Commissioner Claire Hall is running for another term in the May primary election, and along with the many others speaking and writing on her behalf, I, too, support her candidacy and confirm the aptness of her slogan, “Claire Cares!” If you are one who follows this or other local news sources, you will know that
